One of the thrusts of the School of Accountancy is to mold its students into “competent professional accountants who are persons-for-others and are deeply conscious of their social commitment.” Part of the steps taken to concretize this vision is to make its students socially-responsible by integrating in their extra-curricular activities a partnership that will benefit the school’s Night Secondary Students (NSS).
The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) helps in fulfilling this goal by implementing projects for the benefit of NSS. Since 2006, JPIA has been conducting tutorial classes for the NSS. JPIA shows its commitment to serve the NSS by trying to fulfill the needs of its “little sisters” by trying to improve its program for the NSS every year.
In 2007, the organization donated a livelihood cart, complete with goods, change fund, and accounting records. It was in 2008 that the partnership between the department and the organization was formalized into what will be known as the “flagship project” of JPIA. In 2009, the organization donated 30 accounting books and 39 accounting kits and gave financial support to 12 deserving NSS students through a scholarship that covers their monthly allowance and school supplies.
In 2010, the livelihood cart was refurbished, and goods and cash were donated. A sewing machine was also given to the NSS to support their bag making livelihood project. The following year, still continuing its tutorial programs and adapting the book and accounting kit donation, JPIA managed to increase the number of its NSS scholars, from 12 to 15.
This year, the JPIA Executive Board aimed to help NSS students understand their lessons better. This year’s book donation marked a change, as second-hand general education books were donated to the NSS. This was made possible through the generosity of the first year accounting students, who gave their high school textbooks so that the NSS will get to use up-to-date books in Math, Science, and English, among others.
The books were turned over after the JPIA-NSS Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) Signing held last July 27 in the Sr. Caridad-Barrion Hall. Witnessed again by the school’s top administrators and the Council of Deans and Directors, the event formalizes the agreement between the organization and NSS. The MOA was signed by and between Therenzy Anne Cabrera, JPIA President, and each of the 15 grantees. Other signatories served as witnesses to the agreement. They are NSS Principal, Sr. Filipina Pineda, OSB; School of Accountancy Dean, Ester F. Ledesma; School of Accountancy Chairperson, Ronaldo Quiambao; and NSS Coordinator, Ian Dauson.

The written agreement contains provision for reimbursement of the Php 700 annual tuition fee of the grantee, and a Php 500 monthly allowance payable to each grantee at the end of the month. It has also been stipulated that the JPIA grantees must satisfy four requirements to be able to stay in the scholarship program. The requirements are annual family income of less than Php 100,000, general weighted average of 80% per grading period, no failing marks in all subjects
during the school year, and maintaining a good moral standing with no derogatory records during the school year.
The financial assistance embodied in the MOA, as one of JPIA’s projects for NSS, was made possible through the generosity of sponsors. “The School of Accountancy, the organization and our other sponsors are sponsoring the tuition fees of fifteen (15) NSS students,” said Maria Anna Francesca Coronel, JPIA Outreach Liaison Officer. She further disclosed that alumnae and other members of the faculty are involved in helping the grantees financially.
Sr. Pineda showed gratitude the sponsors in her speech during the event: “With our present economic condition now, it’s not easy to share a part our earnings…but God will reward you with your generosity.”
In addition to the general education book donation and financial assistance, accounting kits were still provided to 4th year NSS students. The tutorial system is also continued, and as of press time, is still ongoing. “This tutorial system is primarily the contribution of the Accountancy & Accounting technology students to our sisters in the NSS. Every Wednesday and Friday, from 5:00-6:30pm, students are assigned to teach their sisters in their Business and Accountancy subject,” explained Coronel.
Coronel, who handles the task of monitoring the tutorial system and who tries to maintain the strong bond between JPIA and NSS said that she wants to have a more efficient and effective tutorial system by helping in the holistic formation of the NSS students. For the next semester, JPIA is planning to conduct an activity that would not only benefit their technical learning, but also hone their talents and skills.
Another project that is made possible by the partnership was the Herbal Garden, which is to be launched by the next semester. JPIA is still maintaining its strong relationship with the NSS, and will continue helping them, not only for the organization’s members to learn how to be socially-responsible, but also to show that it is one with the school in “revitalizing the community.” •
